Many types of exploits, viruses, spyware, scams and other threats are present on the web and endanger users daily.  Hilltop works hard to keep abreast of new threats to our users and keep you updated on the most important developing stories.  This page serves to document newly discovered threats so you can avoid them before they cause problems. 

Please note: if you receive any unsolicited emails from Hilltop asking you to click or run anything, please contact us before opening to verify authenticity.

ANY COMMUNICATION FROM HILLTOP REGARDING YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE SIGNED BY A HILLTOP EMPLOYEE BY NAME.  ALSO, WE WILL NEVER INCLUDE EXECUTABLE ATTACHMENTS OR ZIP FILES WITHOUT CONFIRMING THIS WITH YOU FIRST.

If you are not running updated antivirus and antispyware software, we recommend the following products:

Windows Defender by Microsoft - provides free protection from spyware threats.

Grisoft AVG Antivirus - provides free or paid protection from virus threats.

We have received numerous messages claiming to be from Hilltop "technical support" which are notifying the user that their email box has been disabled due to "unusual activity" and including a virus attachment.

Sample:

We are contacting you in regards to an unusual activity that was identified in your mailbox. As a result, your mailbox has been deactivated. To restore your mailbox, you are required to extract and run the attached mailbox utility.

To avoid infection, simply delete the message without opening the attachment.
